If you cloned the same person over and over would it produce the same result as aging does?
The body repairs itself by replacing cells which wear out. Skin is the best example. However, some cells don't divide at all. These include nerve and muscle cells. The average cell is programmed to divide a certain number of times and then stop. Special sections of genes called telomeres form a series of repeating units. A unit is lost for every cell division and the cell can't divide any more after its lost its last telomere. Any form of reproduction resets all the telomeres to their original state. If this didn't happen the offspring would have shorter and shorter lives than their parents and the species would ultimately be unable to breed and of course, go extinct. Many animals clone themselves naturally. It is the fastest way to increase the size of a population. The main disadvantage of cloning is it leaves the population equally vulnerable to disease.
