Is it bad news if is painful?

It has become quite painful to have with my husband. He is well indowed, but my friend says that size doesn't matter, and should never be painful. I am almost 50, and have never experienced this before. Should I have a hysterectomy? She says it could be a sign of oncoming cancer. I hope someone out there can help me decide.
