The bracket broke off because you sheared it off when you accidentally bit down when you were startled. You must have hit it just right to pop the bracket. Usually the first time a bracket needs to be rebonded and you did not break the rules on what foods not to eat, an orthodontist will not charge you (depends on the office, though).
